520 | |a Value inculcation is an important agenda ineducation today but many parents and the general public are concerned about the decline of discipline among young Malaysian. There have been questions raised as to the effectiveness of the Integrated Secondary School Curriculum (ISSC) which emphasizes the inculcation of values across the curriculum. With the current emphasis on participatory manatgement in Malaysian schools, subject panels have been set up in schools as professional bodies seeking not only better performance in teaching-learning activities but also aiming at infusion of values to ensure the sound holistic education of young Malaysians. This study used a survey method using a questionnaire to present the panel head teachers' orientation to value inculcation across the curriculum in secondary schools in Kinta, Perak. The research sample consistd of 122 panel head teachers, teaching various subjects and they were selected using the multi-cluster sampling technique from 16 secondary schools in the district of Kinta, Perak. The purpose of the study was to investigate panel head teacheres' orientation to value inculcation in the four component dimensions of orientation namely goal orientation, task orientation in planning, task orientation in lesson delivery and Islamic revealed knowledge orientation. Investigations also sought to identify if demographic variables such as different subjects, religious affiliations and teachng experience caused any difference in orientation towards value inculcation among panel head teachers. The questionnaire used in this study consisted of two parts; the first was on demographics while the second was the Value Inculcation Orientation Scale (VIOS), a validated scale to assess the panel head teachers' orientation to value inculcation. Data collected were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using mean, standard deviation and also by transcribing interviews conducted with a sample of 56 of the participants who volunteered to be interviewed to glean further information in the area of interest. The findings revealed tht panel head teachers had strong orientation to value inculcation in all for dimensions. The variable of subject did not affect teachers' orientation to value inculcation. The variable of religious affiliation with the exception of Islam did not affect teachers' orientation to value inculcation. It was found that Muslim panel head teachers had stronger oriention in all three dimensions which made them different from the teachers of other religious faiths in their orientation to value inculcation. The variable of teaching experience too, did not affect the teachers' orientation except in the dimension of goal orientation. The majority of panel head teachers conveyed the importance of value inculcation to the other teachers in their panels. The panel head teachers perceived that a majority of teachers understood the concepts and criteria for infusing values in lesson delivery and they also perceived tht a majority of teachers in their panels were actually successful in inculcating values across the curriculum. Panel head teachers are inculcating values, as required of teachers by the National Education Philosophy. | ||
