Description
Summary:This study discusses the concept of Islamic literature and its features as propagated by Muhammad Hasan Burayghish and the extent to which his short stories in al-Shaykh wa al-Za'im collection conform to those. The objective is to evaluate whether the writer has succeeded in putting his theory of Islamic literature into practice while giving due attention to the artistic considerations concerning modern narrative discourse. Thus, the researcher first analyses the views of the writer on Islamic literature and then proceeds to analyzing the short stories in the said collection to see how the writing conforms to the theory, highlighting the elements of artistic achievement as well as elements that need greater refinement. It is hoped that this study would enrich critical studies on Islamic literature so that it would be propelled further towards greater heights and maturity. Among the main findings of the study is that all stories in the collection do embrace the divine guidance or Islamic worldview, which is what the writer called for in his theoretical writings, but it is generally presented in an artistic form that touches some peripheral elements of aesthetic achievement and does not exactly reach the core. Nevertheless, this is not totally unexpected considering the fact that the collection represents the first attempt by the writer at short story writing.
