Thus, the thesis aims to address the concept of livable city according to the West and Islam. Furthermore, it scrutinizes the similarities and differences between the viewpoints of Western and Muslim scholars about a livable city. Subsequently, this research utilizes the qualitative and analytical methods to construct a comparative analysis between livable city from both Western and Islamic viewpoints to bring out the criteria or factors of livability that are consistent with Maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah in providing a clear picture of a livable city in the context of Islam. At the end, the study manages to establish a livable city concept as perceived in Islam within the framework of Maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah. Hence, it is found that the main quality of living factors according to the West and Islamic perspectives are safety, education, health and economic. Preservation of faith, life, intellect, lineage and property is crucial towards the enhancement of urban livable indicator. Maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah outlines a set of traits pertaining to livability that meet the requirements set by material and non-material aspects of life for current and future generations. Adhering to the Islamic approach in terms of livability will guarantee that the corresponding development fulfills the interest of all involved i.e. people, animal and the environment.
