| Summary: | The primary aim of this study is to analyze the feedback of Kuala Lumpur citizens on the Police Omnipresence Programme, one of the programmes that attempts to prevent street crimes. In order to do that, the study analyzes the public perception on crime motivation that leads a criminal to be involved in street crimes in Kuala Lumpur and the role of police visibility in crime reduction. Although many studies have been conducted on public security and crime prevention programmes, their emphasis is more on the causes of crime in general and in the aspect of behavioural studies. The fact that this study is a programme analysis, specifically focusing on street crime in Kuala Lumpur, makes it discrete from virtually all the references available on the topic. In order to arrive at the right conclusion, the study adopts three theories namely: opportunity theory; routine activity theory; and rational choice theory. The findings of the study show that the Police Omnipresence Programme is indeed successful in curbing crimes and, as a result, the public feels safer since the initiation of the programme. It shows from the conclusion drawn from the study that there is a need to continue the programme by maintaining police presence and provision of more financial assistance to the Royal Malaysia Police. |
