Description
Summary:The mam purpose of this study is to identify the necessary characteristics of educational leadership as perceived by the lecturers at the International Islamic University Malaysia. The study attempts to clarify whether the lecturers perceive the characteristics of educational leadership differently according to their qualifications, the universities they graduated from, and their gender. A self-constructed instrument was used to collect data from 180 randomly selected lecturers. The data was then analyzed using descriptive statistics namely means, and percentages. The Test re-test was used to measure the reliability of the instrument. The results suggest that most lecturers perceived all the selected characteristics of Educational Leadership as important. Trustworthiness, competence, responsibility, the ability to solve problems, planning capability, developing teaching method, setting a good example to others, giving priority to general interests over personal interests, motivating and encouraging others were perceived as the most important characteristics in educational leadership. Regarding lecturers' different perceptions concerning the characteristics of educational leadership the results did not indicate significant differences between Ph.D. and Master's Degree holders. Except for Concern of personal appearance there were no differences between the participants from Islamic universities and non-Islamic universities. Lecturers who graduated from Islamic Universities perceived it as moderately important whereas those graduated from non-Islamic universities perceived the concern of personal appearance as very important. Moreover, the study did not show differences in the perceptions of characteristics of educational leadership according to gender.
