Description
Summary:Conducting needs analysis for a language programme is important to gain understanding of the needs of the learners, to document programme effectiveness in terms of the goals and objectives being met, to examine strengths and weaknesses, and to provide empirical evidence of the merit and worth of the programme. The main objective of this study was to investigate the needs of learners in the pre-university English language programme at the International Islamic University Malaysia. The secondary objective was to examine the compatibility of the learning outcomes of the English language courses and the needs of the learners. The study employed triangulation of methods consisting of document analysis, interviews and survey questionnaires, while the triangulation of sources comprised students, teachers, and academic administrator. The findings of the study indicate that there was no significant difference between the students' and teachers' perceptions regarding the English language needs of the students. Additionally, the Mann Whitney U test results show that the perceptions of the teachers, academic administrators, and students were comparable as they expressed the importance of academic reading and writing. The outcomes of the pre-university English language programme and the needs of the students were also found to be compatible. Thus, it can be concluded that the outcomes of the pre-university English language programme correspond to the needs of the learners.
