520 |a This research critically examines the contribution of certain scholars from the 'Ahl al-Hadith' group towards the study of the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the fourteenth century hijrah. The scholars under study are: al-Amir Siddiq Hasan Khan al-Qannuji, Sheikh Nadhir Husayn al-Dahlawi, Sheikh Shams al-Haq al-Azeem Abadi, Sheikh Wahid al-Zaman al-Laknawi, and Sheikh Muhammad Abd al-Rahman al-Mubarakfuri. These selected scholars are examined by means of a study of their books and publications on the explanation of the books on Hadith narrations, introduction to the sciences of Hadith, the defence of the Sunnah and its Imams, and other related issues. The researcher adopted the inductive and critical approaches in his examination of the contribution of the scholars concerning the aforementioned issues. The research concludes that the so called 'Ahl al-Hadith' group appeared in the late thirteenth century hijrah in India and that it has no noticeable relation to the popular Ahl al-Hadith group that appeared in the early centuries of Islam in opposition to the Ahl al-Ra'y. The motto of the so called group of Ahl al-Hadith of the fourteenth century is to abstain from following any of the established schools of Islamic jurisprudence, and to behave directly according to the Qur'an and Sunnah. Despite this, they were not immune from falling victim to religious innovations (al-Bida') and myths, which testifies to the inherent contradiction in their claim to behave according the Qur'an and Sunnah. Nevertheless, scholars belonging to this group have made significant intellectual contributions to the study of Hadith; contributions that are of a non-traditional nature as opposed to the service of Hadith concerning controversial issues.
