This thesis compares Islamic law and laws practised in Singapore. The research was done based on the qualitative method which reviewed books, journals and case studies as sources, statistical data obtained from the Department of Statistics in Singapore and interviews with an experienced lawyer, counselor and MuftÊ of Singapore. The comparisons focused on Islamic law which prohibits Muslims from marrying non-Muslims and the Women's Charter which allows such marriages to occur. Results obtained from the research show that the law reform has yet to be initiated and various considerations and plans will have to be made by the government. The challenge, however is if the law reform were to be implemented, negative implications would accompany the changes as these couples will seek other alternatives such as getting their marriage solemnized overseas, etc. This study also addresses the fate of the children whose parents are involved in inter-religious marriage and information related to Islamic law which affects inter-religious marriage. This study nevertheless is significant as it will raise the awareness among the Muslims by informing them about implications of inter-religious marriages. Finally, it proposes that the government does its best to take the necessary actions to bring about a better future for Muslims in Singapore.
