Finite element analysis of drilling bits stresses in oil and gas industry /

This study uses the Finite Element Method (FEM) to examine the mechanics of rock cutting and calculate the maximum stresses in cutter/rock. One of the most important goals of this study is to develop the modelling such that it is possible to follow the cutter in a whole cutting process in a credible...

One of the most important goals of this study is to develop the modelling such that it is possible to follow the cutter in a whole cutting process in a credible manner and compute the maximum stresses in cutter/rock. A framework of three-dimensional FEM modelling was developed so that the stress process tests could be properly simulated. Berea sandstone and Vosges sandstone rocks were simulated during this study with several different speeds and different depth of cut. The PDC cutter used in the simulation with two bake rake angles in order to see the effect of bake rake angle on the stresses on the cutter/rock. Initial numerical results show a good comparison with few published data.
