Summary: | This study constructs a reading programme for a group of low proficiency primary school students in order to maximize the benefits of language learning. It is hoped that the subjects will be linguistically prepared for the for the class reader programme when they enroll into the secondary school. To ensure the success of the reading programme, a needs' analysis was conducted to match the texts and the children. An ethnographic method of inquiry was adopted to carry-out this action research. Based on classroom observations and supported by triangulated data from specialist and student informants, the following findings surfaced: * the subjects were found to have varied reading interests even though they did share some common reading preferences * interest in the language, and not socio-economic background, played a major role in determining the subjects' language competence * a reading programme which adopts the whole language approach of teaching reading should form the core of the reading programme as it suits the subjects best. Such a programme must include not only fiction but also non-fiction so as to provide the needed variety to maintain readers' interest. Finally, instructions on how to teach reding to beginners are included. |
