Wansbrough is one of the most famous contemporary orientalists and his book “Quranic Studies: Sources and Methods of Scriptural Interpretation” is one of the most important books that has influenced the course of Western study of the Qur'an in the second half of the twentieth century. This research focused on Wansbrough's opinions on the history of the Qur'an, the relationship of the Prophetic Sunnah to the Holy Quran, and the interpretations of the Qur'an. The researcher relied on the inductive method to collect scientific materials and data on the history of the Qur'an and the interpretation of the verses and John Wansbrough's point of view on them. It also relied on the analytical method in analyzing the scientific investigations of the opinions of orientalists and Muslim scholars in the study of Wansbrough and the discussion of these views. The critical method which was adopted in criticizing John Wansbrough's ideas about the Noble Qur'an is to present the fallacy of his arguments. The study reached the following conclusions: the Qur'an was not collected in the ninth century as claimed by Wansbrough, and this has been confirmed by the current world historical evidences. The Qur'an was not formed in a sectarian milieu as argued by Wansbrough in his studies; rather, the variations in it were a sign of comprehension of the language of the Noble Qur'an. The Qur'an is not a tradition that was derived from the Judeo-Christian culture and, therefore, the similarity between the Qur'an and the Bible was to be expected. The researcher has found that Wansbrough has a very vague technique of using historical and cultural evidences that weakened his arguments. It is also important to note that Wansbrough developed a new method in oriental studies of the Holy Qur'an and used the method of literary analysis that Bible scholars used in their studies. His revisionist methodology has opened the door for scholars in the Islamic world to seriously debate and question Wansbrough's analysis of the Quran as a religious text as well as a literary text.
