| Summary: | This research aims to explain the theory of knowledge al-Sayyed al-Sharif al-Jurjani in his book "Sharhu al-Mawaqif." Al-Sayyed al-Sharif al-Jurjani's life, starting with his birth, his scientific journey and ending up with his death, is discussed. In addition, the importance of the book "al-Mawaqif" and its Sharh (elucidation), and the content of the book "Sharhu al-Mawaqif," are further elaborated. Then, the study describes al-Sayyed al-Sharif al-Jurjani's position towards the theory of knowledge, through his comments and responses to the opinions of scholars from different schools of thought, and through their discussions on several topics dealing with the theory of knowledge. The most important topics addressed in this study are: the definition of epistemology, the clarification of its essence, its divisions, its potentials, the way to get access to it, and the possibility of its acquisition. The inductive method is used by the researcher to extrapolate Sharhu al-Mawaqif's book in order to extract the most important topics in which al-Jurjani discussed issues related the theory knowledge. The comparative method is also adopted in comparing the different opinions and statements of scholars mentioned in Sharhu al-Mawaqif's book, and those contained in the original scholars' books. The analytical approach is used to analyse the opinions of scholars and their statements and the suspicions held on these opinions. This study relies mainly on Sharhu al-Mawaqif's book, the original books of scholars mentioned by Imam al-Jurjani for their views on issues related to the theory of knowledge, contemporary and ancient general books related to epistemology, and the linguistic dictionaries. Among the most important findings of the research is that al-Jurjani preferred the Imam Matoridi's definition of knowledge and chose it as the best definition among all the definitions because he saw in it the fulfilment of the definition conditions adopted in the science of logic, speech, and language. Al-Jurjani also had different positions towards the issue of consideration. In defining thinking, he assumed the philosophers' opinion because he saw it as a comprehensive definition of the types of accurate consideration leading to visualization and confirmation as well. At the same time, he agreed with al-Amidi and most scholars to signify the knowledge issue's proper consideration and disagree with al-Razi in his opinion on this issue. |
