The research followed a mixed method approach through both quantitative and qualitative techniques. For the quantitative method the researcher utilised a survey to measure the effectiveness of the professional development programmes provided for women leaders which consisted of two parts. The first part had three key categories: the technical side, the organisational side and the human side. The second part dealt with the level of practice of distributed leadership which involved five categories: the vision, the mission, the objectives, the shared responsibility, the organisational culture, the leadership practices and the professional development. For the qualitative method the researcher used interviews to investigate the reality of the women leadership and to gather in depth data to evaluate the nature and effectiveness of the programmes. The research population consisted of all administrative staff in the ministry of education (385) participants which (6) women leaders. The most significant research outcomes are: The effectiveness of the professional development programme for women leadership in the sultanate of Oman is average as the highest rate was for the human side followed by the organisational side then the technical side which was rated as the weakest by the participants. Women practice for distributed leadership was average in general however the vision, the mission and the objectives were rated highly practiced, professional development was the second in order as it was practiced at an average level followed by the organisational culture in the third place at an average level. In the fourth level was shared responsibility and leadership practice in the fifth place which was rated as average practices by participants. The research found a correlation between professional development programmes effectiveness for women leadership and their level of practice for distributed leadership. The most significant recommendations of the research are :The establishment of a unified training organisation at the national level to cater for the women leadership at senior management levels which can serve various government organisations to prepare women leaders. The provision of customised and tailored leadership programmes with specific target on distributed leadership in senior management levels in the educational fields. The creation of specific standardised evaluation strategies and mechanisms to constantly measure the effectiveness of leadership programmes. | ||
