| Summary: | The purpose of this research is to examine the positions of Iranian society on the issue of sex change or gender reassignment procedure in Iran. The study looked into the reasons, consequences, the point of view of Iranian law, and the comparison between the position of Sunni and Shiite scholars on this matter. The researcher used the inductive approach for data collection as well as the analytical approach to analyse what the scholars said and compare them with the Iranian laws. The most important results the researcher reached are: sex change procedure is not helpful. It does not fulfill the goal that is intended. It causes more harm than good to the person since he/she needs to continue using medicine after the procedure. Female transgender will lose the ability to reproduce. Male transgender will also lose the ability to intercourse. Both will become infertile. This procedure basically works only on the external aspect. Female transgenders will retain their their feminity on masculinity they had before the operation. Even when the physical transformation is achieved, they would have to undergo psychological treatment to deal with the pressure of living with a new gender. This research also looked at the Sunni and Shia differences regarding the gender reassignment medical procedure since the former forbids while the latter allows it. |
