The period under study begins with the advent of the British colonialization of the country in the late 19th century. This period saw the significant implications of the British invasion to the lives of the Malays especially their introduction of a secular modern educational system, which was contradictory nature and framework to the long-existing religious traditional education in Malaya. It had also consequently led to the emergence of a dualistic educational system that would not only cause insoluble dilemma among Malay Muslims but also jeopardise tremendously their Islamic faith. For that reason, this study aimed to study in depth the implications of this problem of educational bifurcation on the Muslims and their responses to it. This study focuses mainly on the Malaya context in the early 20th century, particular attention is given to analyze three different responses from different social backgrounds; Malay traditionalists' perspective, Malay elites and upper class's perspective and Malay intellectuals' perspective, which is the main highlight in this study. In order to understand the methods and approaches adopted by these intellectuals in resolving this educational issue, selected early 20th century publications have been chosen for textual analysis of this study, namely Saudara, al-Ikhwan, and Majalah Guru. This study employs a qualitative method to critically analyse the selected publications, manuscripts, reports, and documents of the early 20th century. The finding of the study reveals the contributions of early 20th century Malay intellectuals in reviving Islamic education for its relevance in a modern period. | ||
