Description
Summary:This research aims to study the problems with translation of the attached pronouns (Ḍamir Muttasil) in the Holy Qur'an into the Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), to expose the similarities and differences between the attached pronouns in Arabic and the personal pronouns in Bahasa Indonesia, and the similarities and differences between translators in translating the attached pronouns in the Qur'an. Based on that, the researcher highlighted the problems in translating the attached pronouns into Bahasa Indonesia through the selected verses of the Qur'an and identified how to translate these problems contained in the attached pronouns, and to determine the methods of translating them when conveying their lexical meanings into Bahasa Indonesia. To achieve the objectives, the research relies on descriptive, analytical, and comparative methods. This research began with a description of the theoretical framework for the attached pronouns in Arabic and the personal pronouns in Bahasa Indonesia, bring out the similarities and differences between them, and define the verses of the Qur'an that contain problems in translating the attached pronouns into Bahasa Indonesia. The translation is then done and analysed, including the comparison between translators. The four selected translators are Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, Ahmad Hassan, Mahmud Yunus, and the translation from the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The findings of this research include the emergence of problems in translating the attached pronouns in the Qur'an led to confusion and ambiguity in understanding the meaning of the verses, where the four translators did not differentiate between the translation of the masculine (mudhakkar) and the feminine (mu'annth) form, also between the singular and the plural. The four translators were inconsistent in translating the pronouns related to the forms of the feminine in one verse, rather they sometime translated it as a singular, and sometime as a plural, or not translate all the attached pronouns in the verse at all. Likewise, all the translators did not collect all the original meanings when transcribing the assertion sentence (Inna naḥnu) into Bahasa Indonesia. Most translators did not indicate the reference of Ha al-Gaib (the third person) when translating it. This research also found that the translators relied on a number of methods when translating the attached pronouns in the Holy Qur'an into Bahasa Indonesia. These include the literal translation, the exegetical translation, the omission of some translations of attached pronouns in the Qur'an, and sometime the explanation of the reference of the attached pronouns.
