In minority Muslim countries, mosques form the focal points for religion, residence, business, education, social and politics. This study uses the descriptive phenomenological approach, interviews, and document analysis to investigate the religious and social functions of selected masjids of the two important large groups of Muslims in China the Hui and Uyghur. Other than worshipping purposes, the findings show that mosques also represent the Muslim community in China. The direction of Muslims can be depicted by looking at the functions that take place in their mosques. The mosques through its functions play the role of an ethnic symbol, an armament of cultural relics, a historical centre, a cultural and academic centre, an administrative centre, a consulate, a tourism centre, and so on.
