They are utilized over the Internet to support a wide range of services, including audio and video applications web browsing, email, online games, and many more. This flexibility of network relies on the Internet protocol (IP)/User Datagram Protocol (UDP), IP/UDP/Real-time Transport Protocol RTP and IP/Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The efficient use of bandwidth is one of the main challenges of today's networks. There are many factors that can affect the efficiency of IP traffic transmission. The IP headers with the encapsulated protocol headers are large compare with the payload size, which may consume a significant part of the bandwidth. Robust Header Compression (RoHC) technique was introduced to reduce the packets header size especially specified for low band networks (satellites and wireless networks) were the bandwidth is limited and expensive. Numerous studies were conducted on the performance of header compression in different type of network characteristics. These studies were basically based on the unidirectional mode implementation. In this dissertation, a prototype was developed under Linux environment to evaluate the compression efficiency of RoHC. The prototype supports the header compression of RTP/UDP/IP, UDP /IP and TCP/IP packets. Performance analysis of RoHC in both unidirectional and bidirectional optimistic modes applied to real-time video streaming traffic, UDP/IP and HTTP/TCP flows over free error channel has been conducted. The finding shows that the header gain in each compression profile is adequate. The implemented robust header compression technique achieved a reduction up to 90% for RTP/UDP/IP, 89% for UDP /IP and 77.5 to 86.5 % for TCP/IP profile. The RoHC unidirectional implementation is recommend when no feedback is required in the transmission.
