520 |a The pollution increased, caused by heavy metals is one of the most serious environmental problems. Heavy metals have an adverse effect on human health and environment. The need for a simple device to detect and monitor heavy metals triggered this concern and heavy metals were selected for this study. The purpose of this research is to optimize the photochromic dyes, 6-nitro BIPS in detection of heavy metals specifically lead, cadmium and chromium from leachate sample. The study is divided into two phases. Data collected from the first phase are used as input for phase two. A full factorial experimental design is performed. These would be used to determine the best settings of the product of the (process) parameters and facilitate this objective. The aims are to determine factors and levels which affect the absorption of the dye and to maximize the response. The factors involved are dye concentration, heavy metals concentration and time exposure to the UV light. The analysis procedures associated with the design such as ANOVA are extensively discussed. The effects of experimental errors, model assumptions and modelling approaches of the results are discussed. The predicted models are validated and investigated. This works has shown that metals either lead, cadmium and chromium has strong influence on the dye. The presence of metals has shifted the absorption spectra in the visible region due to the formation of metal complex.
