Preparation and characterization of rice husk ash (RHA) loaded alpha mangostin as potential drug carrier /

This study is to present the use of RHA as a drug carrier for α-mangostin, a well-known compound that has many benefits for the medical treatment. RH was burnt under controlled temperature and produced ash with contain amorphous silica. Amorphous silica is widely used as a support material because the high surface area which able for loading materials. The ashes were used to prepare for sodium silicate, as precursor silica. The pluronic 123 and 1,3,5 trimethylbenzene were added in synthesis of mesoporous silica (RHA-control) as structure directing and swelling agent, respectively. The specific area for RHA-control is 589 m2/g and decrease in RHAC-α,110 m2/g. The XRD results showed both compounds to be amorphous. Adsoprtion of α-mangostin was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The sample containing α-mangostin was labeled as RHAC-α. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) result showed the decomposition of α-mangostin in RHAC-α. The FESEM micrograph of the compounds showed bigger agglomeration in RHAC-α compared to the RHA-control as evidence the presence of α-mangostin. The drug release profile indicated that there was a burst release corresponding to 47% of the total drug loading in the first 15 minutes. Analyses results indicate that silica RHA has a potential to be used as drug carrier.
