520 |a This is a study on the representations of religions other than Islam in the context of the Islamization of the Malay world as enumerated by 17th century Malay scholars. It deals with issues related to the arrival of Islam in the Malay world and special focus is given to the period of its intense development in the 17th Century. The spread of Islam in the Malay world, beginning from the 13th century onwards, signaled the gradual ending to the centuries-long dominance of the Hindu-Buddhist religion and the South Asian traditions and culture in this region. When Islam spread into the Malay world, it came to overlay the religions and the socio-political system that originated from the subcontinent. Islam began to gain centre stage in the life of the Malays, but without eradicating what had been there before. In order to understand the approaches and methods adopted by these scholars, selected 17th century Malay texts have been chosen for textual analysis. These texts contain direct evidences and accounts on the process of Islamization of the Malay world, vis-à-vis the presence of other religions. This study also looks into the methods adopted by these Malay scholars to explain Islam to the local people. The roles of ulama' before and after the arrival of Islam in the Malay world are also highlighted. This study suggests the gradual process of Islamization from non-Islamic religious beliefs, practices and cultures to those in conformity with Islamic teachings. Ulama', local and foreign, have played key roles in assisting the Malays throughout this process.
