520 | |a Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging and promising new technology in optical wireless communication (OWC). In VLC, optical communication can be established through the light emitting diode (LED), and the transmission medium is known as free space optics (FSO). Compared to radio frequency (RF) communication, VLC can provide high-speed internet as well as illumination using unrestricted and license free visible light spectrum whose wavelength is between 380 nm to 780 nm. In the near future, VLC is a preferred alternative technology for its prominent features of low power consumption, immunity to security, low latency, high data rate, low installation cost and, no health hazard issues. Since the data is transmitted through LED, it is essential to incorporate dimming scheme with it for aesthetic requirements and energy savings. However, dimming has an adverse effect on the communication of VLC system. There are various modulation techniques used for dimming control in VLC. In this thesis, NRZ-OOK, M-PAM and M-QAM-OFDM modulation techniques are investigated for several dimming ranges, transmission distance, beam divergence and bit rate in an indoor VLC environment. The performance analysis is done by simulation using OptiSystem software. Therefore, the focus of this research is to give a basic understanding of modulation techniques and other system parameters for the design of a VLC link under dimming control. BER and Q factor are the most intuitive measure of system performance. Based on the simulation results, 4-QAM-OFDM performs well with BER of 8.19×10-23 and Q factor of 9.76 for 5 Gb/s data speed in a 13m VLC link. A fluorescent lamp is considered as an ambient light noise source for all simulations. Multipath interference and inter-symbol interference for multicarrier modulation techniques are not analyzed in this research. These are the related research topics which can be investigated for future work. | ||
