Summary:This thesis discusses on women empowering efforts that impact the social-economic developments in Jakarta, Indonesia, with special reference to the roles of Nyiur Community that is based at Districts Petukangan and Kamal. Such a community is one of the urban poverty-removal projects designed by the Indonesian Government, where Kotaku programs were organized in collaboration with the World Bank in order to eliminate poverty in Indonesia. This research aims at understanding and evaluating the socio-economic programs designed for members of Nyiur Community as well as pointing out the challenges faced for women's empowerment. The research also explores on the community development programs, which were carried out on a real life-experience setting, concerning participation, empowerment, and social transformation through recycling programs. To gather data for this research, the researcher used qualitative research as research method. Moreover, the study-case technique was opted in order to investigate the case of Nyiur Community. Terms such as “empowerment” and “community development” were used as keywords in the research design. This has helped the researcher to enhance data collection and selection of the cases. Through this way, the researcher was able to capture the descriptive explanations about issues on women's empowerment in Nyiur Community and its strategies to improve their socio-economic condition through community development efforts. The founding data describes an existing situation in urban Jakarta and explores women strategies to earn money for producing recycled handicraft based on household waste materials. In short, it motivates other urban women to engage in the recycling program and strengthen their capacities to preserve the environment. The overall evaluation was in favor of this program as it proved to improve the socio-economic condition.
