Description
Summary:This research examines the readiness of the Arabic language learners at the International Islamic University Malaysia in self-learning through a distribution of a questionnaire to 150 undergraduate learners in the university. The researcher reported a special questionnaire to study self-learning readiness modified from two studies, the first of which was a questionnaire by Spratt, Humphrey and Chan, and the second by Wolters. The questionnaire was divided into three sub-sections: students' perception of teacher responsibility and personal responsibilities in self-learning, students' perception of their own self-learning abilities, and students' participation in learning activities outside the classroom. Most of the respondents had high perception of the responsibilities of their teachers in self-learning. Their evaluation of their own personal responsibilities in self-learning however was low. But, at the same time they had a high perception of their own self-learning abilities. The study has found that most respondents did not participate much in learning activities outside the classroom. Based on these findings, the researcher made recommendations and suggestions for future studies regarding the field of self-learning in learning Arabic as a second language.
