Description
Summary:The goal of this project is to develop GO/Pd Nano-catalytic based steam reformer to generate hydrogen from the exhaust of internal combustion engine. Synthesizing graphene oxide (GO) and palladium (Pd) with CFD and COMSOL software has been conducted and develop the GO-Pd catalytic steam reformer model. The gas chromatography analysis on exhaust of a 4-stroke spark ignition engine has been conducted and found that the concentration of exhaust is 0.5% H2, 0.5% CO, 11% CO2, 21% UHC and H2O. The GO-Pd steam based reformer is expected to reformate the exhaust gas about 35% H2, 5% CO, 10% CO2, 5% PM (UHC) and H2O for exhaust temperature in the range of 300 to 1000C. The enriched H2 is considered with the reformer to be fed directly to the engine. A small turbocharger has been considered in the model to pump the air to the ICE to maintain the required amount of air -fuel mixture including H2. The initial study on this project has been conducted by using CFD and fuzzy SIMULINK model. Result shows that steam reformer with turbocharger will be able to increase the efficiency of the engine about 12% and reduce emission up to 35%. It is expected from this study that the GO/Pd based steam reformer will be able to reduce the NOx due to supply of low temperature steam. Noble GO-Pd exhibits excellent catalytic performance due to the high electron mobility of GO which is useful for the electrolysis and decomposition of H2O into H2 and ½O2, NOx into ½ N2 and Ox, UHC into H2, 2C and N2O into N2 and ½O2. Thus, the GO-Pd catalyst steam reformer can be considered as a promising and innovative device for H2 generation and emission reduction.
