520 |a This study examines the use of hedging devices by Mahathir Mohamad during his live television interviews in 101 East, BBC Hard Talk, Dunya News and Bloomberg Voices. It specifically examines the occurrence of hedging devices used as a discourse practice, to identify the types of hedges that support the issues being raised, and to investigate the linguistically indeterminate expressions of hedges used. The analysis triangulates Hyland's (1998) textual analysis framework with ethnographic research which includes observation, and the transcription of interviews from the abovementioned news media. Through the empirical findings, it becomes clear that Mahathir has employed the reader-oriented hedges more than the other types of hedges proposed by Hyland's (ibid) category of hedges. It is also evident that the attribute-type and reader-oriented hedges support the facts raised by Mahathir during the interviews. The study shows that the indeterminate expressions of hedges have several functions. Hence, this study is able to highlight the significance of understanding the concept of indetermination in shaping the speech style of Mahathir.
