520 |a The Dual Language Programme (DLP) is expected to boost English proficiency among students in government schools by giving students the opportunity to use either English or Malay in Science, Mathematics, Information Technology and Communication, and Design and Technology. It is expected that it will help to enhance students' future employability opportunities. DLP is a programme introduced under the policy 'To Uphold Bahasa Malaysia and To Strengthen the English Language' (MBMMBI). The programme was piloted in 2016 at 300 selected Malaysian primary and secondary schools. The DLP schools must meet four main criteria in order to implement DLP in their school; schools have adequate resources, principal/headmaster and teachers are willing to implement DLP, demand and support from parents and school achievement in Bahasa Melayu. While enjoying strong support by certain sections of the community, the DLP has received strong objections from several parties for several reasons. Therefore, a successful model to implement the DLP is needed. It is important to identify key factors that are crucial in making the DLP a successful programme. SK Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya is one of the schools involved in the pilot project for the DLP in 2016. The school characteristics, strengths, support from the community and commitment from teachers and parents are some of the interesting findings of this study.
