Description
Summary:This research aims to identify the probability of introducing new types of collaterals on Islamic pledging institutions. The study also aims to look at the differences and similarities in the operations carried out at three institutions in Terengganu namely Ar-Rahnu MAIDAM representing the state's pledging institution, Bank Rakyat representing the bank's pledging institution and Pajak Gadai Ban Lee representing the conventional pledging institution. The study uses qualitative method of data collection. This involves library research and semi-structured interviews with three officers namely the Manager of Ar-Rahnu MAIDAM and Ar-Rahnu Consultation Officer, the Finance Executive Administrator of Bank Rakyat Kuala Terengganu Branch and the Operations Manager of Pajak Gadai Ban Lee. Generally, most Islamic pledging institutions only accept gold as the collateral while some conventional institutions accept properties other than gold such as electronic devices and others. Therefore, this research explores other collaterals of the rahn scheme institutions in Terengganu in order to educate and convince people to broaden their views and financial strategies on pledgeable properties while improving the perceptions of rahn schemes and institutions in the eyes of the common people and traders. The survey results of this study show that the Ar-Rahnu MAIDAM which is one of the Islamic pledging institutions in Terengganu is progressing to expand the types of collaterals. This study therefore could attract the attention of economists in enhancing the development of the rahn scheme of Islamic pledging institutions not only in Terengganu but also throughout Malaysia by emulating the current application of Ar-Rahnu MAIDAM practices. Hence, this result demonstrates the success of the proposed extension in achieving the objectives of this study.
