520 |a The software-based architecture of Software Defined Radio (SDR) offers flexibility for radio design which would be promising to facilitate the rapid development requirement of multi-type of communication systems such as broadband wireless system. However, the emergence of hardware and software to support the SDR concept are still considerably new and not mature yet which widely open the rooms for exploration. Therefore, this research aims to explore the capability and limitation of communication system emulated on SDR platform. For these reasons, Universal Software Peripheral Device (USRP N210) with GNU Radio software has been as the SDR platform to emulate an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless communication system. System that based on OFDM has been chosen because the OFDM technique has been widely adopted in various communication technologies and also the strong candidate for future communication technologies. The exploration has been assessed by empirically evaluating the implemented system performance in terms of percentage packet error rate and throughput achieved in every tested scenario. The empirical evaluations have been conducted in several conditions and configurations that represent the effect of OFDM parameters, antenna orientations, and propagation environment to the system wireless communication at 1.8GHz, 2.4GHz and 2.6GHz. In terms of basic OFDM parameters, modulation scheme shows the most significant impact on the system performance with the least packet error rate was achieved at 10% as compared to other parameters. Evaluation on various antenna orientations show that same polarization of monopole omnidirectional antenna gives better performance than cross-polarization with best output was achieved when antenna at horizontal position. Meanwhile, study on the effect of propagation environment shows that transmission in room environment gives better output than at corridor as high number of reflectors in the room helped more data to reach the receiver but at the cost of high error rate. In comparison with OFDM-based system on non-SDR platform, the output of implemented system has shown to be consistent with the non-SDR even though huge difference was shown in their performance. Thus, it can be highlighted that appropriate physical setup with suitable parameter configurations on SDR platform are very important to the emulated OFDM-based wireless communication system. As such, this study presents the ground-knowledge on the usability of USRP and GNU Radio, offers a basis for practical reference of OFDM-based communication and laid a framework for more complex radio design analysis in the nearest future.
