Metal foams is one of the idea to develop constitutive material in automotive industries since it is good for crash management and can absorb energy when it deformed. Recently, new technology had been introduced to replace metallic foam by using aluminium foam sandwich (AFS) due to lightweight and high energy absorption properties. Numerous studies have attempted to investigate the mechanical behavior of AFS. There is limited study about effect of skin and core thickness on the mechanical behavior of AFS. Realizing the gap in the extant study, more research is needed for analyzing the effect of skin and core thickness on mechanical behavior of AFS structures. To address these gaps, this current study was performed to analyse the energy absorption behavior of AFS with different thickness of core and skin that are subjected to compression and impact loading. Fabrication of AFS were made by attaching aluminium foam as a core with aluminium sheets as a skin using epoxy and hardener. Three levels of skin and core thickness had been selected for compression and impact test by using Taguchi method. The experimental results highlight that by increasing the skin and core thickness, it will give remarkable increment of peak force and energy absorbed to AFS that subjected to compression and impact loading. Numerical results using LS-DYNA software were compared with experimental results which portray a good conformity in terms of AFS deformation, and magnitude of force-displacement curves. Lastly, the statistical result had been analyzed using JMP statistical analysis software in order to observe the effect of parameters combination on the responses. From statistical results, it indicate that the peak force, energy absorbed and impact energy increase when the skin and core thickness increase eventually. Both models for compression and impact test were significant to each other with 'Prob > F' was less than 0.05.
