总结: | This dissertation examined the Sino-Afghan relations in the post-Taliban era. This study evaluated the interests and policy options for the two neighbouring countries with special focus on the political, economic, and military sectors. A conceptual framework composed of state as the unitary actor, rationality, and national interest was used to guide this study. The research employed qualitative methods of data collection. Data for this research were mainly gathered from articles, books, official documents, dailies, and speeches of political leaders. This study found that, with the collapse of the Taliban regime in 2001, China has capitalized on its positive historical legacy with Afghanistan to pursue its economic and security interests in the country. Considering Kabul's need for investment and willingness to cooperate, the scenario has offered Beijing the opportunity to strengthen its geostrategic position in its close neighbourhood and contain United States and India as its two main competitors in the Central Asian region. Afghanistan's friendly relations with China has brought the country extensive assistance and developmental projects. Besides China's massive investments and aid for Afghanistan, it has also performed a mediating role between the Afghan government and the Taliban. A close cooperation between both neighbours will not only stabilize Afghanistan but will also benefit China in its security and regional economic initiatives. |
