Description
Summary:This research examines the use of Facebook (FB) by members of the parliament (MP) from party pakatan rakyat (PKR). Guided by the equalisation perspective, the study sought to examine the use of FB among MPs based on three indicators, namely personal factors, informative and interactive approaches of communication by MPs and issues addressed on FB. The content analysis technique was employed to gather data from 28 MPs using FB as the unit of analysis. This non-reactive approach was used to collect and analyse data by developing a coding system which corresponded to three main indicators as outlined in the research questions. The research findings reveal that among the personal factors (age, gender, education level and ethnicity), gender is the only factor that fits the equalisation perspective, female MPs are active users of Facebook as suggested by the equalisation. That the marginalised group are supposed to be active on social media. With respect to communication approach, this study reveals that it does not suit the outline of equalisation because MPs use FB as an informative medium of communication. The majority of MPs use FB for informative posts with a total of 723 out of 826 posts. Informative posts refers to posts that provide information without getting feedback by MPs. Nonetheless, the amount of interactive posts is encouraging with a total of 103 out of 826 posts. FB is considered an interactive medium when MPs reply to comments and do live streaming using the platform. On the issues addressed by MPs, the study developed four categories of issues: constituency issues, anti-government, communal and pro-government issues. The analysis shows that MPs are likely to post constituency issues with 592 posts (72%), followed by anti-government issues at 218 posts (26%), communal at 11 posts (1%) and finally pro-government with five posts (1%). This implies that MPs prefer to post constituency issues on FB. The study reveals that the issues addressed by MPs also do not fit with equalisation because MPs do not posts issues that are not available in traditional mass media the findings derived from the analysis contribute not only to the discourse on contemporary Malaysian politics, but also to the theoretical discussions on the equalisation perspective on FB's use by the opposition party.
