He had made a serious effort to encounter both ideas by producing masterpieces that contained criticism against both figures. This study analyses Rasjidi’s critiques, particularly on Nurcholis Madjid’s idea of secularization and Harun Nasution’s idea of rationalization, by utilizing the qualitative method focusing on content analysis. The findings of this study indicate that in the viewpoint of Rasjidi, the idea of secularization promoted by Nurcholis would cause the separation of religion from the state and the whole worldly affairs as happened in the west. The goal of Nurcholis and his renewal of thought movement in promoting secularization and secularism is to reject the intervention of religion in state affairs. While to Harun’s idea, Rasjidi sees the rationalization that he advocates could generate the sceptical and inferior attitude within the intellectual spirit of Muslims due to excessive use of reason. Finally, this study concludes that in Rasjidi’s critique, it is stated that either Nurcholis or Harun Nasution had been influenced by Orientalist thoughts toward Islam which is not faith- based; rather, it is built upon their worldview known for its dualist, dichotomous and secularist. The goal of Orientalists to produce their understanding about Islam is to make Muslims doubt and sceptical toward Islamic doctrines.
