The background of Ibn Jinni's as a prominent linguist as well as a Mu'tazilite figure influenced his view on language. By focusing on the analysis of two main issues, namely the origin of language and the concept of metaphor, or majaz, to understand divinity, this study seeks to explore the relationship between God, humans, nature, language and meaning. Ibn Jinni's notion for the origin of language rests on the doctrine of divine origin (tawqif) perceived as God gave mankind the ability to institute language. The consequence is the acceptance of tawqif without completely negating the wisdom of human convention (iṣtilah) or stimulation obtained from nature. Furthermore, Ibn Jinni's view of majaz has a connection to expound theological issues such as divine transcendence and free-will. Also, his opinion that the majority of languages are majaz has consequences not only on everyday language but also on the normative interpretation of scripture, especially for de-anthropomorphic purpose. Ibn Jinni's notion of metaphor can be seen as an attempt to speak about God while doing justice to preserve transcendence and affirming His immanence. This can offer an alternative view of the challenges in speaking of God in literal sense, which lead to anthropomorphism on the one hand, as well as the attitude of silence of God that flourish among contemporary secular-atheist thinking on the other.
