However, Muslim women who use these social networking sites share their details publicly with strangers (non-mahrams), which might be problematic. This study aims to propose legal guidelines for women using social media in line with the objectives of the Shariʿah. First, the inductive approach was used to trace and collect information related to social media and the issue of women’s appearance in the public view as discussed by Muslim scholars. Second, the analytical approach was used to study the outcomes of the preliminary study and identify the relevant legal rulings based on the evidence, the underlying theoretical concept, and their real-world application. Third, the field approach was used to conduct a survey involving 502 female Muslim respondents to investigate the purposes, methods, and effects of using social media. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts to propose legal and intentional guidelines for the appearance of Muslim women in social media. The importance of the study was to ensure that Muslim women use social media without violating the Shariʿah. The study found that online communication is generally permissible; however, sharing images on social media must not violate Islamic norms of modesty and decency. The survey revealed that the respondents are aware of the Islamic concepts of awrah, tabarruj, and ikhtilat when sharing images of themselves in social media. They are also concerned with their safety when sharing personal information online. The study concludes that a set of guidelines is necessary to ensure that the online behavior of Muslim women does not violate the five objectives of the Shariʿah.
