Despite the higher number of computer animation content being produced with a few penetrations at the international level, one of the critical struggles highlighted by many animation practitioners is the lack of good storytelling. The significant time spent and investment for the overall content lies in the technical aspects of the animation production compared to the storytelling development. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the storytelling approach, story development process, and storytelling models employed by local animation practitioners. The thesis starts with a literature review on storytelling components, eastern and western animation storytelling, and Malaysian animation. It then continues with a qualitative semi-structured in-depth interview conducted with over forty-eight informants representing local animation practitioners, academics, and audiences. This thesis further evaluates forty episodes of eleven local animated television series from 2010 to 2019. ATLAS.ti 8 and 22, qualitative data analysis software, was used to analyse the data obtained. The findings indicate that animation practitioners and academics have identified and recommended five distinct story development processes for computer animation. The standard practice by practitioners employs the story, character, or topic-driven approach as the fundamental story development approach. In addition, academics recommend the basic story development process and a storytelling model as the basis of storytelling development. The ten storytelling components of plot, character, conflict, setting, resolution, theme, story premise, story flow, story relatable to the audience, and the three-act structure are identified as the critical factors that contribute to the success of an animated television series. This study provides insights into the significance of the storytelling development process in enhancing the storytelling skills and techniques among local animation practitioners and recommends a storytelling model for catered for the Malaysian computer animated television series. 2023-06 Thesis http://shdl.mmu.edu.my/11863/ http://erep.mmu.edu.my/ phd doctoral Multimedia University Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) EREP ID: 11573
