Various Malaysia’s policies have accentuated on the significant role of R&D and innovation in ensuring for the smooth transition into Industry 4.0. However, despite the efforts of the Malaysian government, the nation’s R&D and innovation levels are still relatively low. Weak linkages between the university and the industry have been identified as one of the contributors to the nation’s low technological innovation, as documented in Malaysia’s Productivity Blueprint (2017-2021), Twelfth Malaysia Plan (2021-2021) and 10-10 MySTIE Framework, to name a few. In the literature on strategic alliances, alliance capabilities are seen as a critical attribute that can ensure the success of the alliance and sustain the relationship. However, so far, the literature review has revealed that studies on Malaysian university and industry R&D alliances are still limited, especially in terms of alliance capabilities. Therefore, to encourage and sustain the R&D alliances between Malaysian university and the industry, an investigation into the dimension of alliance capabilities, particularly at the post-formation phase is required. Hence, this study intends to (i) develop a framework of alliance capabilities (alliance management capability, alliance integration capability, and alliance learning capability) and determine how they influence the Malaysian university-industry R&D alliance performance (relational performance, organisational performance, and financial performance) and (ii) investigate the plausible mediation relationship within the alliance capabilities dimensions itself. The data was collected from Malaysian university researchers and industry partners that currently perform of just completed R&D alliances (n=77). Data analysis was then conducted using the PLS-SEM software. As hypothesised, alliance integration capability significantly influences relational and organisational performance. Alliance learning capability has a significant influence on relational performance. However, none of the alliance capabilities constructs have any influence on the financial performance. Additionally, alliance management capability was found not to have any influence on the R&D alliance performance. Interestingly, alliance integration capability does mediate the relationship between alliance management capability and alliance learning capability. This study has been able to validate the alliance capabilities framework and provide insights on how it influences the R&D alliance performance and expand the application of dynamic capabilities into this framework. Additionally, based on the results of this study, policymakers, universities, and industry can identify what alliance capabilities are and how they can help them to sustain their R&D alliances and achieve higher R&D alliance performance.
