Description
Summary:This study integrates environmental literacy and Integrated Behavioural Model (IBM) to address the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3Rs) issues of households in Malaysia. A total of 166 questionnaires were collected from the top five states with the highest number of households and analysed using the partial least squares structural equation modelling approach. The result shows that personal agency and attitude are important factors influencing the intention to perform 3Rs, while environmental literacy, intention, knowledge and skills, environmental constraints and habit are significant factors of 3Rs behaviour. In addition, the result associating the environmental literacy and behavioural factors shows that there is a moderation effect of environmental literacy on the relationships between personal agency, attitude, and perceived norms on intention to perform the 3Rs. Overall, by incorporating environmental literacy into the IBM model, the finding provides new insight into the household solid waste issue not only from the perspective of behavioural factors but also from the aspect of environmental education in Malaysia. The finding corroborates the importance and the need to further strengthen the awareness and environmental education in the country, which can be achieved through environmental education curriculum, environmental awareness campaigns, as well as active and close collaboration between all stakeholders including government agencies, educational institutions, industries, non-governmental organizations, and households.
