The company consists of two manufacturing facilities one of which produces finished products and the other producing intermediates products with similar production environment. There is a transportation between the two facilities. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem. The decisions include lot sizes of both finished product and intermediates, inventory, batch sizes, regular hours, over time hours utilized, number of trips between the facilities and amount of intermediates shipped in drums. The objective is to minimize the total cost involved. The mathematical developed is attempted to solve using CPLEX solver. Since the MIP solver is unable to provide a solution for a larger problem instances, a real coded problem specific constraint based genetic algorithm that can deal with the industrial size problem encountered in real life industrial environment is proposed. Computational results indicate that our proposed approach to solve this problem can provide good results that enable managers dealing with such situation to enhance their decisions in a reasonable time. 2012-01 Thesis http://shdl.mmu.edu.my/5449/ http://library.mmu.edu.my/diglib/onlinedb/dig_lib.php phd doctoral Multimedia University Faculty of Business and Law
