Summary: | This study has examined how bank specific and macroeconomic determinants affect the profitability of 46 banks in China over the period of 2006-2012. In order to take into account the impacts of the 2008 financial crisis, the study separately considered the years before the crisis, namely the period up to 2007, the crisis years 2008 to 2009, and postcrisis year 2010 to 2012. The profitability determinants in this study include bank-specific factors and macroeconomic factors. To date, no econometric study has examined and compared the determinants of profitability changes for Chinese banking market pre-, during- and postcrisis period. As a result, it allows us to gain new insights into what determine the profitability of Chinese banks and which determinants have changed over pre-, during- and post-crisis period. |
