Technology development on these mobile devices increases exponentially. With the introduction of internet connection on mobile devices, mobile devices perform more like a handheld computer. Today’s mobile devices can be used to read current news, watch videos, play games, take pictures, listen to music, email, map navigation as well as internet browsing. Different types of human-machine interaction is suitable for certain type of application, thus, there are always rooms for new type of human-device interaction as there are wide varieties of applications available. One of the possible human device interactions is motion. Unsurprisingly, this type of interaction is already used in today’s mobile devices, mostly in mobile games. Typical motion interaction incorporated into today’s mobile devices are using hardware sensor called accelerometer. However, accelerometer cannot detect mobile device’s motion along x, y or z axis. This type of motion (along x, y or z axis) may not be useful in menu navigations or games but it is useful for future applications. In order to fulfill the requirements of new type human-device interaction, this thesis aims to study the existing vision based motion sensing techniques and based on the studies, a new type of vision based motion sensing techniques is proposed. The proposed vision based motion sensing technique is an improvement of current existing motion sensing technique as well as a technique that is computationally suitable for mobile device.
