Summary: | In this study, design and characterization processes of rare- earth doped fibres with modified Silica host have been investigated. A Ga co-doped Erbium doped fibre was fabricated and its performance was analysed concentrating on absorption spectrum, ASE spectra and fluorescence lifetime. Then the fabricated Ga co-doped EDF was incorporated in an EDFA operated in the Conventional Erbium Window. A 980 nm backward pumping scheme was used to characterize the amplifier. Design phase of the EDF was carried out based on the spectroscopic data of commercially fabricated “Leikki” EDF. An Al co-doped Thulium doped fibre was designed giving preference to concentration of modifying oxides and waveguide parameters. The fabricated Al co-doped TDF was characterized for fluorescence lifetime, absorption and emission spectra. Design considerations of two TDFAs are also discussed in this study. Gain and noise figure characteristics of an Al co-doped TDFA were numerically simulated for two optical communication bands. Short wavelength band (S band) and New band (Ultra long wavelength band above 1600 nm) were considered in this context. |
