Summary:In recent years, the uses of rare earth (RE) ions have allowed a major development in the optical telecommunications industries. The presence of the optical fiber amplifier provides better opportunities for the modern telecommunication networks. The first all optical fiber amplifier by using an erbium-doped silica fiber have been demonstrated by a group of researchers from the University of Southampton. The wavelength range offered by erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is around 1530 nm to 1600 nm. With the increased of the internet usage, the amount of information to be carried over the transmission systems becomes exponential. Due to the massive increase in bandwidth, the EDFA window for communication has reached its limits. Thus, this demand for higher bandwidth has demanded for a major research and development into developing better and more efficient fiber based optical amplifiers. Thulium (Tm) is one of the rare earth elements that are widely used especially in optical fibers such as lasers, temperature sensors and many more. It has a wavelength of 1700 nm to 2100 nm which is a suitable wavelength range in the optical amplification research. It is non-toxic to the environment and it has more resistant to oxidation than most RE elements. Thulium has attracted the most attention due to their potential application as optical amplifiers.
