總結:The ability of thulium ions in glass fibres to emit light in the near infrared region has opened doors to many potential applications in the field of photonics. The full potential of thulium ion is obtained when it is doped inside soft glass host due to the low multi-phonon transition loss of the glass. However, the low chemical and thermal stability as well as the complicated fabrication process of soft glasses encourage the search for more compatible hosts (i.e. silica based fibres). In a high phonon energy glass host such as silica, the multi-phonon decay is large enough to compete with the radiative emission and consequently suppresses the observed emission. This work focuses on undertaking this issue by modifying the thulium environment in silica with modifier metal oxides. The feasibility of this proposed solution is investigated from its initial process of fabrication to its final outcome of emission quantum efficiency.
