Summary: | The existence of Collective Management Organization can be traced back from 1791. Collective Management Organization in the music area dates from 1851 when the French society SACEM (Society of Authors, Composers, and Music Publishers) was established to administer public performance rights in musical works. The date is significant because it predates the adoption of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in 1886. Despite the long history of Collective Management Organization and the increasing number of the local independent composer, their concern to the existence of the CMO become questionable matter. Therefore, this research presents the recognization on the CMO among the independent composer in Malaysia. A qualitative methodology was adopted as the method of this research. The results of this research according to the objectives of the research were achieved explaining the understanding of the local composer towards the CMO. Their understanding of their own right and the roles and functions on the CMO are concerning as they understand their own right and the roles and functions of CMO but they do not understand it in total. This is due to lacks of exposure on the importance of the CMO and Copyright Law. This study serves as a promising and helpful reference for future research as this research give an insight into this matter. Therefore, improvement action needs to be taken by all parties to improve the identified conundrum from this research. |
