decision-making regarding the development and management of water resources. The management of societies, especially traditional Ghanaian societies was always based on
indigenous knowledge systems and practices. These unique cultural settings allowed the empowerment of specific gender groups. Subsequently, the colonial administration brought with it water administration at a central level which was not coordinated properly. This has resulted in
a disjoint between traditional water management systems and that of the formal management systems. Though there has been an overhaul of legislative and institutional frameworks for water resources management the customary systems still apply to water resources governance in a
pluralistic Ghana. |
