Civil engineering (General) This study is exploring the potential of transforming a conventional road intersection into a StormPav system, where multiple units of modular units are assembled together for traffic movement and road drainage. Incorporating with the urban stormwater management, a newly added function of the high strength concrete precast modules includes storing stormwater inside the internal module chambers during downpour. In order to remove standing water from road surface, service inlets are provided on the pavement to infiltrate the runoff at a controlled rate. This implication is tested in the laboratory and further verified through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. As a result, both studies show that the surface running water is fully infiltrated through the service inlets that function like a multiple-orifice plate. The surface infiltration rate of the service inlet is found at a range of 5,000 – 20,000 mm/hr. Moreover, it is found that the range is of great advance compared to other products in the market. This work implies that multi-orifice road intersection is applicable for busy urban areas as it offers a solution to improve the existing road drainage during rainy season without disruption to traffic movement.
