Description
Summary:A wildlife study was conducted in a fruit orchard located at Batu Kawa, Kuching between November 2006 and January 2007 which coincided with the fruiting season of some seasonal fruit trees. The orchard was 3 ha in size with the fruit tree density of 67 trees! ha. /the study was carried out to determine the diversity of wildlife in the fruit orchard and the residents' perception regarding wildlife. Line transect, mist netting and cage trapping was performed to gather the wildlife occurrence data;/~he Shannon-Weinner diversity index of 3.52 and 0.97 were obtained for the avifauna and small mammals respectively. The density of different bird categories was Significantly different showing that not all categories of birds were well adapted to the fruit orchard. The smaller nectar, fruit and seedeating birds were the most abundant in the orchard with the density of 15.86 birds! ha and the density of the larger ground-living, non-probing birds the lowest (1.65 birds! ha). Questionnaire survey revealed that the common small mammal that was found in the area was the Plantain Squirrel (Cal/osciurus notatus) and it was considered a pest. All the respondents think that we should conserve the local wildlife and will involve in wildlife conservation if given a chance.
