| Summary: | This research is conducted to examine the process and function of affixing the prefix of derived verbs in the Iban language folktales. This study focusing on the prefixes that appeared in front of the verbs in Iban language. There are two objectives that are highlighted which are to describe the process of combining prefix affixes in Iban language verbs and to explain the function of the prefix in the verbs. This study is a qualitative research that describes the process and functions of prefix in the verbs. The data used in this study is the corpus text of Iban folk tales that obtained from the book Tiga Ensera by The Tun Jugah Foundation (2009). Data collection is carried out by marking and classifying a number of verbs with prefixes in the text of the stories that are Indai Jubang (Sang Lamat, 2003), Kumang Bunsu Ikan Buing (Muda Sandin@Stevenson, 2004) and Kumang Nyera (Mathew Banyin Nyaru, 2003). Data was analyzed by applying the structural theory in the research model of Omar and Sandai (2012). The results of the study showed that the process of affixing prefixes in Iban language verbs involves the process of addition and nasalization. In the process of addition, there are four prefixes namely {be-}, {di-}, {te-} and {eN-} while the nasalization process involves nasal prefix {N-}. Data analysis also detects the function of prefix affixes that refer to the grammatical meaning in each prefix affix.
