The consensus among previous scholars of the four mazhab regarding the minimum and maximum duration of menstrual bleeding that is currently being observed is based on their observations back in the days eventhough the menstrual cycle is known to subject to various factors, which these factors are reactive to time and geoghraphical changes, especially those of aforementioned factors. This notion creates a need for reevaluation of the consensus to ensure the dynamic nature of fiqh and ensure the relevance in accordance to current situations especially in Malaysia. In view of that, this research was conducted to study factors that have significant impacts on the menstrual cycle according to views of experts in medicine and fiqh, in order to assimilate these findings into the previous consensus of the 4 scholars to maintain its relevance. This qualitative study has incorporated the expertise of 10 distinguished personnels in their respective fields; medicine, nutrition, psychology and Islamic scholars through interviews. The outcome of these interviews are clear; the previous consensus is still accurate in Malaysia and all experts are unanimous that aforementioned factors should be taken into account if a new ijtihad is to be considered. Research also found a synergy between medical practitioners and religious scholars in Malaysia regarding issues that revolve around menses. Furthermore, medical practitioners are utilizing the laws of sharia in their practice while maintaining a medically sound definitions. Hence this study aims to shine of importance of understanding the natire of menses itself by understanding the underlying factors especially among adult women in Malaysia, because ultimately , the menstrual bleeding is an important medical issue that requires a clear guideline from the Shara’ as it is prudently observed in most Islamic practices.
